Oral vs IV sedation at the dentist: your questions answered
sedationdentistry
Common questions about oral and IV sedation, including how they differ, how you'll be monitored and who might benefit.
Choosing between sedation options can feel confusing. Here are the questions we hear most often, answered plainly.
What is oral sedation?
Oral sedation is a medication taken by mouth before your appointment. It can help you feel more relaxed during treatment.
What is IV sedation?
IV sedation is given through a small IV and can keep you deeply relaxed. It is often considered for people who are very anxious or who need longer treatment.
How do I know which is right for me?
It depends on your anxiety level, your health history and the treatment planned. We'll decide together at your consultation.
Will I be monitored?
During IV sedation, a heart monitor tracks your ECG, heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen level and breathing rate. Your trained team stays with you throughout.
Who looks after me?
Our dentist and certified dental assistant are both trained in IV sedation, and we use non-opioid medications.
What treatments can sedation help with?
Cleanings, fillings, root canals, wisdom teeth, dental implants and more advanced surgery. Ask whether it suits your situation.
Do I need someone to take me home?
Yes, we'll help you plan how to get home safely afterwards.
Can I just have a gentler visit without sedation?
Absolutely. Many patients simply need us to explain each step and go at their pace.
