Laser Dentistry FAQ: Pain, Safety, Cost, and Insurance

Does it hurt? Is it covered? Is it safe for kids? The questions patients ask most about dental lasers, answered plainly.
We get the same handful of questions whenever we mention the laser. Here are honest, plain-language answers.
Does laser dentistry hurt?
Most laser treatments feel like gentle warmth or a light tapping. Many procedures — small cavities, gum therapy, frenectomies — need little or no freezing. Larger work still gets numbed for your comfort.
Is it safe?
Yes. Dental lasers have been used clinically for decades and are approved by Health Canada. We use protective eyewear and calibrated settings for each tissue type.
Is it safe for children?
For the right procedures — like a tongue-tie release or a small cavity — lasers can actually make the visit easier for kids because there's often no needle and less noise than a drill.
Does insurance cover laser procedures?
Coverage is tied to the procedure, not the tool. A gum therapy code is billed the same whether we use a laser or traditional instruments. If you have questions about billing, see our dental insurance FAQ.
Will the laser replace my regular cleaning?
No. The laser supports gum care; it doesn't replace scaling and polishing by your hygienist.
Can every dentist do laser treatment?
No — it requires specific training and equipment. You can see what we use on our dental technologies page.
