CDCP, Sun Life & Direct Billing: Dental Insurance Questions, Answered
dentalinsurance
Clear answers to the CDCP, Sun Life, and direct-billing questions South Surrey and White Rock patients ask most often.
Dental insurance in BC comes with a lot of fine print. Here are plain-language answers to the questions we hear most from new patients.
Does the CDCP cover my cleaning and checkup?
Yes — the Canadian Dental Care Plan covers preventive services like exams, cleanings, and x-rays for eligible patients, usually at set fee-guide rates.
Can you bill CDCP directly so I don't pay upfront?
For most eligible treatments, yes. We submit the claim to Sun Life (the CDCP administrator) and you only pay any remaining co-pay at the end of the visit.
What if I also have private insurance?
Private insurance is billed first; CDCP acts as the secondary payer. We'll coordinate both so you see one clear total.
Will I know the cost before treatment starts?
Yes. You'll get a written estimate including the insurance portion before we proceed with anything beyond a routine exam.
What about major work like crowns or implants?
Coverage depends on your plan tier and the CDCP schedule. For a deeper look, see our dental implants guide and CEREC crowns guide.
How do I confirm I'm CDCP-eligible?
Sun Life mails a welcome package with your member ID once Service Canada approves you. Bring that ID to your first visit — more detail on our new patient page.
