How to prepare for a dental appointment when you feel nervous
anxietyfree
A calm, step-by-step way to get ready for your dental visit, from what to say when you book to simple ways to feel at ease in the chair.
Feeling anxious before a dental appointment is common, and a little preparation can make the day feel much more manageable. Here is a gentle, step-by-step approach you can use before any visit at Morgan Heights Dental Centre in South Surrey.
Before you book
- Tell us you're nervous. When you call or book online, let our team know. We'll plan a slower pace and extra time for questions.
- Choose a time that suits you. If mornings feel calmer, ask for an early slot. Tuesdays we're open until 7, and Saturdays are available too.
- Read what to expect. Knowing the steps can take away much of the uncertainty. Our new patient information walks through the process, and our first visit guide covers it in detail.
The day of your visit
- Eat lightly and arrive a few minutes early. Rushing can raise stress, so give yourself time to settle in.
- Bring something comforting. Headphones and a favourite playlist or podcast can help.
- Agree on a stop signal. A raised hand means we pause right away. Many patients find that simply having control makes a big difference.
- Breathe slowly. In for four counts, out for six. Practise it in the waiting room and again in the chair.
Ask about comfort options
Some patients like extra support. Sedation can be one option, and we're happy to talk it through with no pressure. Our sedation dentistry guide explains the choices, and you can read about oral vs IV sedation too.
After your appointment
Take a moment to note what went well. Each comfortable visit makes the next one easier. If anything felt uncomfortable, tell us so we can adjust next time.
We see the whole family, so family dentistry is available under one roof. Call 604-535-8835 whenever you're ready.
