Published

Dental anxiety is common. Learn how oral and IV sedation differ, how you're monitored, and how our South Surrey team helps nervous patients feel at ease.

If the thought of a dental visit makes your stomach flip, you're far from alone. Sedation can help you feel relaxed, and our team goes at your pace.

Who might consider sedation?

  • People who feel anxious about dental visits
  • Patients having longer or more involved treatment
  • Anyone who finds it hard to relax in the chair

Oral sedation

You take a prescribed medication before your visit, which helps you feel calm. It's often chosen for mild to moderate nerves. You'll need someone to take you home afterward.

IV sedation

Medication is given through a small line in the vein, so the level of relaxation can be adjusted during your appointment. It's often considered for higher anxiety or longer visits.

How you're monitored

Your heart rate, blood pressure and breathing are monitored throughout so the team can keep you safe and comfortable.

How to prepare

  • Tell the team about your nerves when you book
  • Share your medications and health history
  • Arrange a ride home
  • Follow the instructions you're given for eating and drinking

Which one is right for me?

Your dentist will talk through your history and preferences and recommend an option. Our sedation dentistry guide has more detail, and our overview for anxious patients shows what to expect.
