Quick answers to common CDCP questions: which treatments are covered, what a predetermination is, and what to ask before your appointment.

Here are short answers to questions we often hear from patients using the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). Coverage rules come from the Government of Canada, so treat this as general guidance and check your own plan for specifics.

What is a predetermination?

It is an estimate we send to CDCP before larger treatment. It helps you see what may be covered and what your portion could be. It is not a guarantee of payment.

Why is there sometimes a portion left to pay?

CDCP pays from its own fee schedule, while we follow the BC Dental Association's fee guide. When the two differ, that difference becomes your portion. We explain it before treatment.

Do I need to pay up front?

We bill Sun Life directly for CDCP, so you generally pay only your portion. Our front desk will confirm what to expect when you book.

Are all treatments covered?

Not necessarily. Coverage depends on the service and your plan's rules. Some cosmetic services, for example, may not be included. Ask us and we will check before you commit.

What should I bring to my visit?

  • Your CDCP information
  • Photo ID
  • A list of any medications you take

Can I switch dentists and keep CDCP?

In general, you can choose a dental provider that accepts CDCP. Confirm with the office when you book.
