How to Care for Your Tooth After a Root Canal

Published

A step-by-step aftercare plan for the days and weeks following a root canal, from managing soreness to protecting the tooth until your crown is placed.

Your root canal is done — now the goal is a smooth recovery and protecting the tooth until the permanent restoration is in place. Here's what to do, day by day.

The first 24 hours

  1. Wait until the numbness wears off before eating so you don't bite your cheek or tongue.
  2. Take any prescribed or recommended pain reliever on schedule, not just when discomfort peaks.
  3. Chew on the opposite side, especially if a temporary filling is in place.
  4. Skip very hot foods and drinks while your mouth is still numb.

Days 2–7

  • Mild tenderness when biting is normal and usually fades within a few days.
  • Keep brushing gently and flossing carefully around the treated tooth.
  • Rinse with warm salt water if the gum feels tender.
  • Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods (nuts, ice, caramel) on that side.

Until your crown is placed

A tooth that has had a root canal is more brittle than a healthy one. Most back teeth need a same-day CEREC crown to restore strength — don't delay this step, since an unprotected tooth can crack.
