A simple step-by-step guide to getting ready for a dental cleaning, from what to do the day before to what to expect in the chair.

A routine cleaning shouldn't feel stressful. A little preparation helps your visit go smoothly and helps your hygienist give you the most useful check-up. Here's how families in South Surrey and White Rock can get ready.

Before your visit

  1. Gather your details: bring your insurance information and a short list of any medications you take.
  2. Note any concerns: jot down sensitivity, bleeding gums, or sore spots so you remember to mention them.
  3. Brush and floss as usual: there's no need to scrub extra hard. Your hygienist is there to help, not to judge.
  4. Plan your timing: arrive a few minutes early, especially if you're a new patient.

During your cleaning

  1. Your hygienist checks your gums and may measure them (called gum charting) to track gum health over time.
  2. Plaque and tartar, the hardened buildup that brushing can't remove, are gently cleaned away.
  3. Your teeth are polished, and you'll get plain-language tips that fit your own mouth.
  4. The dentist reviews your exam and shows you any X-rays or photos.

If you feel nervous

Tell the team. Pauses, explanations, and comfort options are all part of the visit. You can also read our sedation dentistry guide to learn about options for anxious patients.

After your visit

Your teeth may feel a little sensitive for a day. If it lingers, see our tooth sensitivity guide.
