Digital impressions at the dentist: how the 3D scan works
dentaltechnology
Learn how a digital impression replaces impression trays, what the scanner captures, and why it can make crown visits more comfortable.
If you dislike the thought of impression trays, you will be glad to hear there is another way. Here is how a digital impression works at our South Surrey office.
What is a digital impression?
It is a 3D model of your teeth made with a small handheld scanner. Instead of biting into a tray of material, the scanner captures your tooth and surrounding gums in a short sweep.
How the scan works
- The scanner takes many images as it moves over your teeth.
- Software joins them into a detailed 3D model on screen.
- We can check the scan right away and rescan an area if needed.
Why patients often prefer it
- No trays and no impression material
- Less gagging for many people
- A clear view on screen, so we can show you what we see
What happens next
For a crown, the scan is used to design the restoration on screen, adjusting shape, fit, and how it meets your bite. It is then milled in our office. See the whole visit in our same-day crown walkthrough or our same-day CEREC crowns guide.
Other uses
Digital scans can also support planning for other treatments. Ask us what is suitable for you.
