Crown or implant? Understanding your options for a damaged tooth

A calm overview of when a crown may help, when an implant may be discussed, and how to talk through the choices with your dentist.

A broken or heavily damaged tooth can leave you with questions. Two options often come up: saving the tooth with a crown, or replacing it with an implant. Here is how to think about each.

When a crown may be considered

A crown covers and protects a tooth that still has enough healthy structure. It is often suggested for large fillings, cracks, or teeth treated with a root canal. Learn about the process in our same-day CEREC crowns guide.

When an implant may be discussed

If a tooth cannot be saved, an implant is one way to replace it. Our dental implants guide explains the steps, and our post on dental implant costs and coverage lists good questions to ask.

How we help you decide

  • An exam and a low-dose digital X-ray
  • A clear explanation of your options
  • Costs discussed before treatment

Only an exam can show which option suits your tooth, so we never decide in advance.
