Zirconia vs All-Ceramic vs Gold: Choosing Your Crown Material

Published

The crown material matters as much as the crown itself. Here's how zirconia, all-ceramic, and gold compare for strength, look, and tooth preservation.

Once you've decided you need a crown, the next question is what it should be made of. Each material has a job it does best.

Zirconia

Extremely strong, ideal for molars that take heavy chewing load. Modern zirconia is tooth-coloured and far more aesthetic than earlier generations, though not quite as translucent as lithium disilicate. Good choice for grinders and back teeth.

All-ceramic (lithium disilicate)

The most natural-looking option — light passes through it the way it does through a real tooth. Our top pick for front teeth and premolars that show when you smile. Strong enough for most posterior teeth too, and millable chairside with CEREC.

Full gold

Still the gentlest option on opposing teeth and the longest-wearing material we have. Needs the least tooth reduction. Not aesthetic, so typically reserved for back molars where it doesn't show.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM)

A porcelain outer layer over a metal core. Durable and time-tested, but can show a dark line at the gumline over time. We use it less often now that zirconia and lithium disilicate have improved.

How we help you choose

Dr. Alenabi considers tooth position, your bite, grinding habits, and how much enamel is left before recommending a material. Call 604-535-8835 to book an assessment.
