Titanium vs zirconia dental implants: what to know
dentalimplants
A balanced look at titanium and zirconia implants, covering research, appearance, and why we generally prefer titanium.
If you are researching implants, you will likely see two materials mentioned: titanium and zirconia. Here is a plain-language look at each. You can find the wider picture in our dental implants guide.
Titanium implants
Titanium has the longest track record. It forms a thin layer of titanium dioxide that limits corrosion and helps bone cells attach, which supports osseointegration. Published research shows about 95 percent of titanium implants remain in place after ten years, though results vary.
Zirconia implants
Zirconia is a metal-free ceramic, and its tooth-coloured look appeals to some patients. A 2023 review reported about 97.2 percent five-year survival. That is encouraging, but the long-term research is shorter than for titanium.
Side-by-side considerations
| Factor | Titanium | Zirconia |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Metal | Metal-free ceramic |
| Research history | Decades | Shorter |
| Reported survival | About 95% at 10 years | About 97.2% at 5 years |
| Colour | Grey metal, hidden under gum and crown | Tooth-coloured |
These figures come from different studies and time frames, so they are not a direct head-to-head.
Why we prefer titanium
With decades of research behind it, titanium gives us the most predictable evidence base. That said, the right choice depends on your health, your bone and your preferences, so we talk it through with you.
