Common questions about sedation dentistry answered — from what options exist to how safe they are and who qualifies.
If dental visits make you anxious, sedation can make treatment feel manageable. Here are the questions patients ask most often.
What sedation options are available? Most clinics offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation (a pill taken before the visit), and IV sedation for longer or more complex procedures. Your dentist will recommend based on your anxiety level and the treatment.
Will I be asleep? No — most dental sedation is conscious sedation. You stay awake and responsive but feel deeply relaxed. General anesthesia (fully asleep) is rare and usually reserved for hospital settings.
Is sedation dentistry safe? Sedation is safe for most healthy adults when administered by a trained dentist. You'll complete a medical history review beforehand, and vital signs are monitored during the appointment.
Can I drive home afterward? Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes, so you can drive home. Oral and IV sedation require a friend or family member to drive you.
Does insurance cover it? Coverage varies. Nitrous oxide is often partially covered; oral and IV sedation may or may not be. Ask for a pre-authorization to check.
Who's a good candidate? Patients with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty getting numb, or those facing longer procedures. Kids and patients with special needs may also benefit.
