Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes. IV sedation is provided by Dr. Farid Alenabi, a UBC Doctor of Dental Medicine with over twenty years of experience. We use non-opioid medications, and your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels are continuously monitored on medical-grade equipment throughout the appointment.
Will I be unconscious?
No. You'll stay in a drowsy, deeply relaxed state — able to respond to instructions but comfortable enough that most patients remember very little of the visit afterward.
How much does sedation dentistry cost?
Cost depends on the length of your appointment and the treatment being performed. Sedation is billed separately from the dental work itself. We'll provide a written estimate at your consultation so there are no surprises.
Is sedation covered by dental insurance?
Coverage varies. Some plans cover IV sedation when it's medically necessary — for example, for complex surgical procedures or documented dental anxiety. We're happy to help you check with your provider before booking.
How long does the sedation last?
The medication wears off gradually over a few hours. Most patients feel back to normal by the next day, though we ask you to avoid driving, alcohol, and important decisions for 24 hours.
Can I eat before my appointment?
No. You'll need to fast from solid food for at least 6 hours and clear liquids for 2 hours before IV sedation. We'll confirm exact instructions when you book.
Do I need a ride home?
Yes — a responsible adult must drive you home and ideally stay with you for a few hours. You cannot drive or take transit alone after IV sedation.
