Sedation Dentistry FAQ: What Anxious Patients Ask Most
faq
Straightforward answers to the most common questions about sedation options, safety, and recovery for nervous dental patients.
Dental anxiety is more common than most people realize. These are the questions we hear most often about sedation dentistry.
What types of sedation are available?
Options typically range from nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for mild relaxation, to oral sedation pills taken before the appointment, up to IV sedation for longer or more complex procedures.
Will I be unconscious?
Most sedation keeps you awake but deeply relaxed. You can respond to instructions but often remember very little afterward. General anesthesia, where you're fully asleep, is a separate option.
Is sedation safe?
When administered by a trained team with proper monitoring, sedation has a strong safety record. Your medical history and medications are reviewed beforehand.
How long does it take to wear off?
Nitrous oxide clears within minutes. Oral and IV sedation can take several hours, so you'll need someone to drive you home and plan a quiet rest of the day.
Can I eat before my appointment?
Instructions vary by sedation type. Oral and IV sedation usually require fasting for several hours beforehand.
Does insurance cover sedation?
Coverage varies. Some plans cover sedation for specific procedures like wisdom tooth removal but not routine cleanings. Ask for a pre-authorization estimate.
