Sedation Dentistry FAQ: Answers for Anxious Patients

Published

Common questions about sedation dentistry answered — from how it feels to what it costs, for patients who've been putting off the dentist.

If dental anxiety has kept you out of the chair, sedation dentistry can change that. Here are the questions we hear most often from patients considering it for the first time.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes. Every sedation option we offer is monitored throughout your appointment, and we tailor the type and dose to your health history. The most common form — nitrous oxide — wears off within minutes of the mask being removed, so you can drive yourself home.

Will I be unconscious?

Usually no. Most patients stay awake but deeply relaxed, able to respond to simple questions but often with little memory of the visit afterward. General anaesthesia (fully asleep) is reserved for specific cases.

What kinds of sedation are available?

Options include nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation (a pill taken before the appointment), and IV sedation for longer or more complex procedures. Your dentist will recommend the right level based on the treatment and your comfort. Our sedation dentistry guide explains each in more detail.

Can I combine sedation with other treatments?

Yes — sedation is often paired with longer visits like implant placement, multiple fillings, or wisdom-tooth removal so everything is completed in one relaxed appointment.

How much does it cost?

Costs vary by sedation type and appointment length. Some extended benefit plans cover a portion, especially for surgical procedures. We'll provide a written estimate before booking.

How do I get started?

Book a no-pressure consultation. We'll go over your medical history, discuss which option fits, and answer anything else on your mind. Become a new patient or call 604-535-8835.
