Sedation Dentistry for Anxious Patients: What Your Options Actually Are
sedationdentistry
Nitrous, oral sedation, or IV? A plain-language deep dive on sedation dentistry options for anxious patients in South Surrey and White Rock.
Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people put off care for years. Sedation dentistry exists specifically so that doesn't have to keep happening.
The three options you'll hear about
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) — inhaled through a small nose mask, wears off within minutes of removing it. You can drive yourself home. Best for mild anxiety and shorter procedures.
Oral sedation — a prescribed pill taken before your appointment. You stay awake but deeply relaxed, and most people remember very little afterward. You need a ride home.
IV sedation — delivered by a trained provider, this is the deepest option short of general anesthesia. Reserved for severe anxiety or long, complex appointments.
How we match the option to you
Before we book sedation we talk through:
- How much anxiety you actually feel vs. anticipate
- Your medical history and current medications
- The length and type of procedure
- Whether you have a driver
There's no bravery test here. A short cleaning with nitrous is a perfectly reasonable choice.
What the day looks like
You'll arrive a little early, we'll confirm vitals, start the sedation, and only begin treatment once you're comfortable. We monitor you throughout, and we'll go over post-visit instructions with the person driving you home.
Who it helps most
- Patients who've avoided the dentist for years
- Strong gag reflex
- Difficulty getting numb with freezing alone
- Kids and adults with sensory sensitivities
- Long appointments like multiple fillings or implant placement
