Same-Day CEREC Crowns in South Surrey: The Technology Explained
technology
How digital scanning and in-office milling turn a two-week crown appointment into a single visit — no temporaries, no second freezing.
Traditional crowns take two visits, a temporary, and a wait. CEREC changes the workflow entirely by moving the lab into the dental office.
What CEREC actually does
CEREC combines a digital intraoral scanner, design software, and a small milling unit. Instead of taking a physical impression and shipping it to an outside lab, the dentist scans your prepared tooth, designs the crown on screen, and mills it from a ceramic block in the office.
The visit, step by step
- Numbing and preparation — same as a traditional crown.
- Digital scan — a small wand captures the tooth in a few minutes. No gooey impression material.
- Design — the dentist shapes the restoration on screen to match your bite and neighbouring teeth.
- Milling — the ceramic block is milled in roughly 15 minutes while you wait.
- Bonding — the crown is polished, checked for fit, and bonded that same visit.
Total chair time is usually around two hours.
Why the workflow matters
No temporary crown. Temporaries can come loose, feel odd, and leave the prepared tooth sensitive between visits.
One freezing, one appointment. Especially useful if you travel for work or find dental visits stressful.
Precision fit. Digital scans avoid the small distortions that can happen with putty impressions, which often means less adjustment at seating.
Tooth-coloured ceramic. CEREC blocks are matched to your shade and bond well to remaining tooth structure.
When CEREC isn't the right call
Some cases — like heavily broken-down teeth needing lab-layered ceramics for front-tooth aesthetics — still benefit from a traditional lab crown. A good dentist will tell you when that's the case rather than defaulting to whichever tool is fastest.
