In-office whitening promises a brighter smile in about an hour, but not all systems work the same way. Here's what sets Philips Zoom apart and how the session actually unfolds.
The whitening gel does the heavy lifting
Zoom uses a hydrogen-peroxide gel that breaks apart stain molecules inside the enamel and dentin. Because the concentration is higher than what's available in take-home trays, results appear within a single appointment rather than over two weeks.
The LED light accelerates the reaction
A blue LED light is positioned in front of your teeth during three or four short sessions. The light activates the gel and speeds up the oxidation process, which is why in-office results can be several shades brighter than trays alone. Your gums and lips are protected the whole time
Before the gel is applied, a protective barrier is placed along the gum line and a retractor keeps your lips and cheeks away from the gel. That's what allows a stronger formulation to be used safely.
Sensitivity is temporary and manageable
Some patients feel short "zings" during or after the session. We include a desensitising gel at the end of your visit and recommend avoiding very hot or cold drinks for the first day. Sensitivity typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours.
How results compare to take-home trays
In-office Zoom is faster and often brighter after one visit; take-home trays offer more gradual control and are easier to top up over time. Many patients combine the two — a Zoom session for the initial lift, then trays for maintenance. Both options are covered in our whitening guide.
