Every routine hygiene visit at Morgan Heights Dental Centre includes an oral cancer screening. It's fast, painless, and one of the best reasons to keep your regular cleaning schedule — early detection dramatically improves treatment outcomes.

What the screening involves

Your dentist visually examines the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, roof and floor of your mouth, and the back of your throat, then gently feels the jaw and neck for lumps or unusual firmness. The whole check takes just a few minutes and blends into your regular exam.

What your dentist is looking for

• White or red patches that don't wipe away
• Sores that haven't healed after two weeks
• Lumps, thickened tissue, or rough patches
• Unexplained bleeding or numbness
• Difficulty swallowing, chewing, or moving the tongue or jaw
• Changes in how your teeth or dentures fit together

Many of these findings turn out to be harmless — a cheek bite, a canker sore, a viral spot — but they're worth checking so anything unusual can be monitored or referred early.

Who's at higher risk

Risk factors include tobacco use, heavier alcohol use, prolonged sun exposure to the lips, HPV infection, and age over 40. That said, oral cancers can appear in people with no known risk factors, which is why the screening is part of every adult hygiene visit — not just high-risk patients.

What happens if something looks off

Most of the time, your dentist will note the area and re-check it at your next visit to see if it changes. If a spot is suspicious or persistent, they may refer you to a specialist for a biopsy. Catching problems at this stage — before any symptoms appear — is exactly what the screening is designed for.

Between visits, watch for changes
