Common questions about laser-assisted gum therapy — how long it takes, how it feels, what it costs, and whether insurance covers it.

Laser-assisted gum therapy comes up a lot in our South Surrey office. Here are the questions we hear most.

How is laser gum therapy different from a regular deep cleaning?

It's an add-on, not a replacement. Scaling and root planing still removes the tartar; the laser follows up in the pocket to reduce bacteria and help inflamed tissue settle down.

Does it hurt?

Most patients describe warmth or a light tapping. Freezing is often used for the scaling portion, and the laser step itself is usually well tolerated. It isn't guaranteed pain-free, but many people find it easier than they expected.

How long does recovery take?

Gums typically feel tender for 24–48 hours. You can eat normally the same day, avoiding very hot or crunchy foods for the first evening.

How many visits will I need?

Most protocols involve two to four appointments spaced across a few weeks, followed by a maintenance schedule tailored to your gum health.

Will my insurance cover it?

Coverage varies. Many plans cover the scaling and root planing portion under standard periodontal codes; the laser adjunct may or may not be covered. Our front desk can help estimate before you start.

Can the laser cure gum disease on its own?

No. Gum disease is managed with a combination of professional care and daily home care. The laser is one useful tool in that plan.
