IV Sedation for Dental Anxiety: A Closer Look at How It Works
sedationdentistry
A deep dive into IV sedation for anxious patients — the medications used, how monitoring works, and why it's ideal for longer visits.
Of the sedation options available in dentistry, IV sedation offers the deepest, most predictable relaxation for patients with significant anxiety or long procedures ahead. Here's a closer look at how it works at our South Surrey office.
How IV sedation is delivered
A small catheter is placed in a vein, usually on the back of your hand or inner arm. Medication flows steadily into your bloodstream, which means Dr. Alenabi can adjust your sedation level in real time — deeper when needed, lighter as we near the end of the visit.
The medications we use
We use non-opioid sedative medications with a long clinical track record. They produce:
- Deep relaxation without full unconsciousness
- Reduced awareness of time passing
- Partial or complete amnesia of the appointment
- Minimal residual grogginess compared to older sedation drugs
You stay breathing on your own and able to respond to simple instructions throughout.
Continuous monitoring
Safety is the reason IV sedation feels different from taking a pill at home. During your appointment, we continuously monitor:
- Heart rate and rhythm (ECG)
- Blood pressure
- Blood oxygen (pulse oximetry)
- Breathing rate
All on medical-grade equipment, with a trained team member watching the readings at all times.
Why it suits anxious patients
Unlike oral sedation, IV sedation reaches full effect within minutes and can be titrated to exactly the level you need. That means:
- Consistent comfort for the entire visit, whether it's 45 minutes or 3 hours
- No waiting to see if a pill will "kick in"
- The ability to complete multiple treatments in one appointment — a huge win for patients who dread repeat visits
Who provides your sedation
Dr. Farid Alenabi personally administers IV sedation. He is a UBC Doctor of Dental Medicine with over twenty years of experience and additional training in sedation.
After the appointment
You'll feel drowsy for a few hours as the medication clears. A responsible adult must drive you home, and we recommend a quiet day of rest before returning to normal activities.
