How to Prepare for a Laser Gum Therapy Appointment

Published

A quick, practical walkthrough of what to do before, during, and after laser-assisted gum therapy so your visit goes smoothly.

Laser-assisted gum therapy is gentler than many people expect, but a little prep makes the appointment easier and the results better. Here's exactly how we recommend getting ready.

Before your appointment

  1. Eat a light meal an hour or two beforehand — most patients don't need freezing, but a steady blood sugar helps you stay comfortable.
  2. Brush and floss gently that morning. We want the gum tissue clean but not irritated.
  3. Tell us about medications — especially blood thinners, antibiotics, or anything new since your last visit.
  4. Skip whitening products for 48 hours before, since gums may be slightly sensitive.

During the visit

We'll walk you through each step. The laser tip is small and quiet. You'll feel warmth, not drilling. If you've booked a cleaning on the same day, the hygienist works first, then the laser targets bacteria deeper in the pockets.

After your appointment

  • Stick to soft, lukewarm foods for the rest of the day.
  • Avoid alcohol-based mouthwash for 24 hours.
  • Resume gentle brushing that evening; flossing the next day.
  • Mild tenderness is normal for a day or two.

Most people are back to normal within 24 hours. If you have questions about how the laser fits into your care, see our dental technologies or book at Morgan Heights Dental Centre.
