Most dentists recommend a first visit around age one, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. Early visits are short, gentle, and focused on getting your child comfortable with the chair, the lights, and a friendly hygienist.

Step-by-step: preparing at home

1. Talk about it a few days ahead. Use simple, positive words like "count your teeth" and "tickle them clean." Avoid words like "hurt," "shot," or "drill," even in reassurance.
2. Read a picture book about the dentist. Familiar characters help demystify the visit.
3. Play pretend at home. Take turns being the patient. Use a toothbrush to "count" teeth and shine a flashlight in the mouth.
4. Time the appointment well. Pick a slot after a nap and a light snack — not right at bedtime or when your child is hungry.
5. Bring a comfort item. A favourite stuffed animal or blanket often rides along in the chair.
6. Stay calm yourself. Kids read parents closely. If you're relaxed, they usually are too.
