How to Brush and Floss Between Dental Cleanings

A step-by-step home-care routine to protect your teeth and gums between hygiene visits at Morgan Heights Dental Centre.

Your professional cleaning does the heavy lifting, but what you do at home decides how long that fresh-cleaned feeling lasts. A consistent daily routine keeps plaque from hardening into tartar and helps your gums stay calm between visits.

Step 1: Brush twice a day, the right way

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Angle the bristles at about 45 degrees to the gumline and use gentle, short strokes for two full minutes. Divide your mouth into four quadrants and spend 30 seconds on each.

Step 2: Floss once a day

Wrap about 45 cm of floss around your middle fingers, guide it gently between each tooth, and curve it into a C-shape against the side of the tooth. Slide it up and down — never snap it into the gums. Water flossers are a good alternative if traditional floss is tricky.

Step 3: Rinse and clean your tongue

A fluoride mouthwash reaches spots your brush can miss, and a quick pass with a tongue scraper cuts down on bacteria that cause bad breath.

Step 4: Watch what you eat and drink

  • Ease up on sugary snacks and sipping sweet drinks throughout the day
  • Choose water after meals to rinse away food particles
  • Crunchy fruits and vegetables help stimulate saliva, which naturally protects enamel

Step 5: Keep your recall appointments

Home care goes a long way, but it can't remove hardened tartar. Book your next visit on the schedule your hygienist recommends — usually every three to six months. For more detail, see our dental cleaning guide or contact our office to book.
