Fluoride Treatments and Dental Sealants: A Closer Look at Preventive Care for Kids

How professional fluoride varnish and sealants protect children's teeth from decay — and when each one makes sense for your child.

Two of the quietest workhorses in children's dentistry are fluoride varnish and dental sealants. Neither is flashy, but together they prevent a huge share of childhood cavities — which is why we recommend them for many young patients in South Surrey and White Rock.

What professional fluoride actually does

Fluoride strengthens the outer layer of the tooth (the enamel) and helps reverse very early decay before it becomes a cavity. In the office, we usually apply it as a varnish — a sticky, quick-drying coat painted onto clean teeth. It takes a couple of minutes, tastes mild, and stays put long enough to do its job.

How dental sealants work

Molars have deep grooves on their chewing surfaces where a toothbrush bristle can't always reach. A sealant is a thin, tooth-coloured resin flowed into those grooves and hardened with a curing light. Once cured, it acts like a shield: food and bacteria slide off instead of settling in.

Application is painless — no freezing, no drilling. Most sealants last several years and are simply checked and touched up at regular visits.

When each one is a good fit

  • Fluoride varnish: typically recommended two to four times a year for kids, teens, and adults with higher decay risk.
  • Sealants: most commonly placed on the first permanent molars (around age six) and second molars (around age twelve), soon after they erupt.

What to expect at the appointment

Both treatments are usually added onto a regular cleaning. Your child sits back for a few extra minutes while the hygienist paints on varnish or places sealants. Eating is fine within about 30 minutes of fluoride; sealants are ready to use right away.

The bigger prevention picture

Fluoride and sealants work best alongside twice-daily brushing, daily flossing, and a diet that isn't constantly bathing teeth in sugar. Your dental team can help you build the routine that fits your household.
