Dental Implants FAQ: Costs, Timeline, and Recovery Questions Answered

Straight answers to the most-asked questions about dental implants — how long they take, what recovery feels like, and who's a candidate.

Considering an implant? Here are the questions we hear most often at Morgan Heights Dental Centre.

How long does the full implant process take?

Most cases run three to six months from placement to final crown. The bulk of that time is osseointegration — the implant fusing with your jawbone — which can't be rushed.

Is implant surgery painful?

The procedure itself is done under local anesthetic, so you shouldn't feel pain during placement. Most patients describe post-op soreness as milder than a tooth extraction and manage it with over-the-counter pain relievers for a day or two.

Am I a candidate if I've been missing a tooth for years?

Often yes, though bone may have shrunk in the empty space. A 3D scan tells us whether a bone graft is needed before placement.

Will an implant look and feel like a real tooth?

The crown is custom-shaded to match neighbouring teeth. Because it's anchored in bone like a natural root, it feels stable when you chew — no slipping, no adhesive.

How do I care for an implant?

Brush and floss it like a natural tooth. Implants don't get cavities, but the gum around them can still develop inflammation, so cleanings matter.

How long do implants last?

With good hygiene and regular check-ups, implants often last decades. The crown on top may need replacement sooner than the implant post itself.
