A dental implant looks like a single tooth, but it's actually three engineered components working together. Understanding what each part does helps you make sense of treatment plans, timelines, and cost estimates.
The implant post
The post is a small titanium (or occasionally zirconia) screw placed into the jawbone. Titanium is used because bone cells grow directly onto its surface — a process called osseointegration that locks the implant in place over several months. Learn more in our guide to dental implants.
The abutment
Once the post has integrated, an abutment is attached on top. This small connector rises above the gumline and gives the future crown something to seat onto. Abutments can be stock or custom-milled to match your bite and gum shape.
The crown
The visible tooth is a crown — usually zirconia or porcelain — designed to match the shade, shape, and contact points of your neighbouring teeth. It's either screwed or cemented onto the abutment.

Separating the components allows:
- Precision: each part can be swapped or upgraded independently
- Durability: the titanium post can last decades while the crown can be replaced if it ever chips
- Aesthetics: a custom abutment and crown can be tuned to your smile without disturbing the bone-integrated post
