Dental Cleaning FAQ: Cost, Frequency, and What to Expect
dentalhygiene
Common questions about professional dental cleanings — how often to book, what they cost in BC, and whether they hurt.
If it's been a while since your last cleaning, it's normal to have questions before you book. Here are the ones our team hears most often at Morgan Heights Dental Centre.
How often should I get a dental cleaning?
Most patients do well with a cleaning every six months. If you have gum disease, are prone to tartar buildup, or have certain medical conditions, your hygienist may recommend every three to four months.
How much does a dental cleaning cost in BC?
Fees follow the BC Dental Fee Guide and depend on how much scaling time is needed, whether X-rays are taken, and whether fluoride is included. Many cleanings are partially or fully covered through private insurance, the Canadian Dental Care Plan, or provincial programs for kids and families.
Does a cleaning hurt?
A routine cleaning shouldn't be painful. If your gums are inflamed or you have sensitive teeth, you may feel some tenderness — let your hygienist know and they'll adjust their approach.
How long does a cleaning appointment take?
Most hygiene visits run 45 to 60 minutes, including the exam, scaling, polishing, and any X-rays.
What's the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar above the gumline. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) goes below the gumline to treat gum disease and typically takes more than one visit.
Do I still need cleanings if I brush and floss well?
Yes. Even careful home care leaves some plaque behind, and once it hardens into tartar, only professional tools can remove it. Read our dental cleaning guide for more, or book with us when you're ready.
