Cosmetic Smile Makeover: What's Actually Involved in Transforming Your Smile

Whitening, veneers, bonding, contouring — a look at what goes into a cosmetic smile makeover and how a plan is built around your goals.

'Smile makeover' sounds like one procedure but it's really a coordinated plan. Here's what actually goes into one and how the pieces fit together.

Starting with a goal, not a treatment

The first appointment is a conversation — what bothers you, what you'd change, what you'd keep. Photos and a scan capture the starting point. From there, options are matched to the goal, not the other way around.

Whitening as the foundation

Most makeovers start with whitening because it sets the target shade for any restorations that follow. Crowns and veneers can't be re-whitened once placed, so shade decisions have to happen in the right order. See our teeth whitening guide for the two main systems.

Bonding and contouring for small fixes

Chips, small gaps, and uneven edges often don't need veneers. Composite bonding — tooth-coloured resin sculpted directly on the tooth — and enamel contouring can reshape a smile conservatively in one visit.

Veneers for bigger changes

When shape, alignment, or heavy staining need a reset across several front teeth, thin porcelain veneers bond over the existing tooth. Modern designs preserve more of the natural tooth than older-generation veneers.

Crowns where structure matters

If a tooth is cracked, worn, or heavily filled, a crown restores strength as well as appearance — sometimes in a single visit with CEREC.

Sequencing matters

A good plan sequences treatments so each step supports the next: hygiene first, then whitening, then restorative work in the shade decided upfront.
