Traditional dental x-rays are flat. They show teeth and bone in two dimensions, which works well for cavities but leaves gaps when planning surgery. Cone Beam CT (CBCT) fills those gaps with a true 3D view.

How CBCT Works

A cone-shaped x-ray beam rotates around your head once, capturing hundreds of images that reconstruct into a 3D model of your teeth, jaw, sinuses, and nerves. The scan takes under a minute and uses far less radiation than a medical CT.

Where It Changes the Treatment Plan

  • Dental implants: Precise measurement of bone height, width, and density to select the right implant and avoid the sinus or inferior alveolar nerve.
  • Wisdom teeth: Clear view of root position relative to nerves before extraction.
  • Root canals: Detection of extra canals and complex root anatomy that 2D x-rays can miss.
  • Airway assessment: Helps evaluate patients being screened for sleep-related concerns.

Why It Matters for Patients

Better imaging means fewer surprises during surgery, more predictable outcomes, and often shorter chair time. For implants specifically, CBCT is the foundation of guided placement.

Radiation and Safety

CBCT exposure is higher than a single dental x-ray but far lower than a hospital CT. It's used only when the diagnostic benefit is clear.
