Cone Beam 3D CT for dental implants: what the scan actually shows

A closer look at Cone Beam 3D CT imaging — what it captures, why it matters for implant planning, and how it makes surgery more precise and predictable.
A regular dental X-ray shows a flat picture. A Cone Beam 3D CT (CBCT) scan shows your jaw in three dimensions — bone, nerves, sinuses, and existing teeth — all at once. For implant planning, that difference changes everything.
What the scan captures
In about 20 seconds, the CBCT rotates once around your head and builds a full 3D model of your upper and lower jaw. From that model we can measure:
- Bone height and width at the exact spot where an implant would go
- The path of the inferior alveolar nerve in the lower jaw
- The floor of the sinus in the upper jaw
- The angle and spacing needed so the new tooth bites correctly
Why it matters for implant planning
With a 3D model, we can plan the implant virtually before touching the mouth. We choose the exact length, diameter, and angle, then a surgical guide is 3D printed to match that plan. On surgery day, the guide sits over your teeth and directs the implant through a small, precise opening — no guesswork, less swelling, and a shorter recovery.

Is a CBCT scan safe?
A dental CBCT uses a focused, low-dose beam — far less radiation than a medical CT scan of the head. For any implant, sinus, or complex extraction case, the safety and accuracy benefits are well worth it.
