The ceramic behind a CEREC crown: strength, shade, and why it looks natural

A closer look at the milled ceramic block that becomes your crown — how it's shade-matched, strengthened, and finished chairside.

The reason a same-day crown can look and feel like a natural tooth comes down to the material it's carved from. Here's what makes CEREC ceramic different — and why we can finish the whole restoration in one visit.

It starts as a solid ceramic block

Every CEREC crown begins as a small, solid block of high-strength dental ceramic. The block comes in a range of shades, so we can pick the one that matches your surrounding teeth before we mill.

Milled to a precise shape

Once your crown is designed on screen from the digital scan, the mill uses fine diamond burs to carve the shape out of the block — cusps, grooves, contact points, and margin all in one solid piece. There are no seams or layers that can chip apart later.

Sintered and glazed on site

After milling, the crown is fired in a small furnace right in the office. This step, called sintering, brings the ceramic to full strength and locks in the shade. A thin glaze is added and fired again, giving the surface the same subtle sheen as natural enamel.

Metal-free and biocompatible

Because there's no metal core, there's no dark line at the gumline and no metallic taste. The ceramic is well tolerated by gum tissue and reflects light the way a natural tooth does.

Bonded, not cemented

The finished crown is bonded to your prepped tooth with a modern adhesive, creating a strong seal at the margin. Once it's set, you can eat on it right away.
