Sedation Dentistry for Anxious Patients: Options, Safety, and What to Expect

A deep look at sedation options for anxious dental patients — from nitrous to IV sedation — and how to pick the right level for your visit.

If the thought of a cleaning makes your palms sweat, sedation dentistry can change the experience entirely. Here's how the options actually differ.

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

Inhaled through a small nose mask, nitrous takes effect within minutes and wears off almost as fast. You stay fully awake and can drive yourself home. Best for mild anxiety and shorter procedures.

Oral sedation

A prescribed pill taken about an hour before your appointment. You'll feel deeply relaxed and may not remember much of the visit, but you'll still respond to the team. You'll need a ride home.

IV sedation

Medication delivered through an IV line, titrated in real time by a trained provider. Ideal for longer or more complex treatments, or for patients whose anxiety hasn't responded to lighter options. Monitoring is continuous throughout.

How we decide what's right for you

We review your medical history, current medications, past dental experiences, and the length of the planned procedure. There's no 'default' — the goal is the lightest level of sedation that gets you comfortably through the appointment.

Safety basics

Blood pressure, oxygen, and heart rate are monitored throughout. You'll get written pre- and post-op instructions, and someone needs to drive you home for anything beyond nitrous.

More detail is in our sedation dentistry guide. If dental anxiety has kept you away for a while, that's exactly who we built this program for.
