Digital Dental X-Ray FAQs: Safety, Dose and How Often

Common questions about low-dose digital X-rays and 3D Cone Beam imaging at our South Surrey practice.

Patients often ask about dental imaging — here are plain-language answers.

Are digital X-rays safer than film?

Digital sensors need far less radiation than traditional film to produce an image. A typical digital bitewing exposes you to a small fraction of the daily background radiation you'd get from everyday life.

How often do I need X-rays?

It depends on your age, cavity history and gum health. Many adults with stable teeth only need bitewings every 18–24 months, while kids and higher-risk patients may need them more often.

What's the difference between a regular X-ray and a 3D Cone Beam scan?

Standard digital X-rays show flat views of a few teeth. A 3D Cone Beam captures a full three-dimensional image of your jaw, sinuses and nerves — we use it when planning implants, complex root canals or wisdom tooth removal.

Can I skip X-rays?

You can decline, but we may not be able to catch cavities between teeth, bone loss or infection early. We'll always explain why an image is being recommended.

Are X-rays safe during pregnancy?

Routine X-rays are usually deferred during pregnancy unless there's an urgent concern. Let us know if you're pregnant or might be.
